Many times children/adolescents/young adults do not need traditional therapy, but instead need coaching to help them achieve their goals and deal with the factors that are obstacles to reaching their goals. For example, some children or adolescents have poor study strategies or use poor memory strategies when trying to learn information for tests, etc. Dr. Thorne works with the students to set realistic goals, both short-term and long-term, and teaches the students research-based organizational and memory strategies. Use of these strategies generally improves grades in school. Dr. Thorne also works closely with the students’ teachers when allowed by the school to assure that there is carry over in the classroom. This is often combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy when there is a need to change the students’ attitudes and expectations.
